One day trip to Unije
Island of Unije is located north-west of the island of Susak. Due to it’s size it is well connected with Mali Lošinj and in turn with Susak.
Geology of the island of Unije
In most part Unije is very different from Susak - it’s a typical mediterranean island. Most of it is covered by low rugged bushes and grass, which among sharp rocks try to find some soil for their roots.
Flat plains in the southern part of the island do however resemble Susak, since they are covered with a thin layer of yellow dust, which is so typical of Susak.
Things to see on Unije
Apart from the village located at the center of the island, Unije takes pride of having it’s own air field, abandoned army bunkers at the hill Hartina and the remains of an old fish factory in the bay of Maračuol.
It would be unfair not to mention the abandoned lighthouse build in 1873, which is located at southern cape Vnetak.
Planning your trip
The local shipping line and catamaran both connect Susak and Unije with Mali Lošinj, which makes them perfect for cheap one-day visits to Unije. You can head from Susak to Unije early in the morning and do a return trip late in the afternoon, which should give you planty of time to thoughrally explore Unije.
It’s best to take the morning catamaran, which on it’s way from Mali Lošinj to Rijeka makes a stop first on Susak, and later on Unije. The same catamaran in the late afternoon makes it’s way back to Mali Lošinj, during which it again visits Unije, and then Susak.
If you wish to leave Unije earlier you can take the local ship, which also visits both islands.
Since the schedule is different for each day of the week, while planning your trip make sure to consult the schedule.
